ODNR Observes Black History Month with a Celebration of African American History, Poetry and Art

COLUMBUS, OH -- Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) employees will observe Black History Month with a two-part celebration on Thursday, February 27 at the department's Columbus headquarters.

Highlights of the program include a motivational presentation on African American history by Dr. Frank W. Hale, Jr., vice provost and professor emeritus at The Ohio State University, and a portrayal of "The Era of the Buffalo Soldiers" by Jack Harris and the Cambridge Historical Awareness Society. The celebration will also feature a musical presentation by vocalist Darlene Slaughter and a dramatic reading by Denise Roddy from the poems of Maya Angelou. Guests will also enjoy an exhibition of African American art.

ODNR employees will then have an opportunity to sample favorite African American dishes at a Soul Food Taster, and be entertained by 7th and 8th grade students from Indianola Middle School. The winner of ODNR's Black History Month contest will also be announced.

The historical and artistic program begins at 11:00 a.m. in ODNR's Building E Assembly Center, followed by the Soul Food Taster beginning at noon in the Building C Cafeteria.
