GIMS Program Introduction and Index

Geographic Information Management Systems (GIMS) is a term used by DNR to describe a collection of related technologies used to manage spatial data. These technologies include geographic information systems (GIS), computer-aided design systems, automated and desktop mapping systems, remote sensing and image analysis systems, and their related database management systems. The goal of the GIMS program is to provide natural resource information to the public in a more efficient and effective manner.

The Department of Natural Resources GIMS web pages contains information related to digital geographic data and the Geographic Information Management Systems Program. The site is divided into the following four sections:

  • Data Search & Metadata - This section allows the user to browse the DNR metadata system. Users can search the digital data directory, generate metadata reports and download selected data. Where data cannot be directly downloaded, the metadata report gives transfer instructions and contacts for alternative ways to acquire the data.

  • ODNR GIMS Standards and Guidelines - This section is an online version of the ODNR GIMS Standards and Guidelines publication. The DNR publication describes the Department’s GIMS program, and includes chapters on DNR’s GIMS strategy, GIMS policy, data documentation (metadata), and guidelines on software, hardware, cartography and map design.

  • Division Contacts & Links - This section provides GIS contacts within the various divisions of the Department of Natural Resources, and links to GIS information in their web pages. Since not all of the digital geographic information within the Department has been added to the DNR metadata system, these contacts and links may provide an additional source of desired data.

  • GIMS FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) - This section contains answers to questions most frequently asked about DNR’s Geographic Information Management Program, the metadata system and using this site.

For a more complete discussion of the GIMS Program, select the ODNR GIMS Documents button and view either GIMS Standards & Guidelines or DNR GIMS History & Applications. The History & Applications requires Microsoft Powerpoint or Powerpoint Viewer, which can be downloaded here. If you have questions or comments about the Department’s GIMS Program or this web site, please contact the DNR GIS Coordinator. He can be contacted at:
